The man following Hassan Tariq through the Zamalek backstreets on the night of 29 October has been doing this work for eleven years. He is thirty-four years old. He carries no identification. The phone in his pocket is one of three he uses on rotation and contains exactly the messages a Cairo taxi driver’s phone would contain — which is what he is dressed as, on a Tuesday in October at eleven minutes past ten, walking forty metres behind a man he has been tracking since the previous Thursday. He has not been told whose name is on the contract. He has not been told who is paying.
