Eva Stuart had been lying on the top bunk for an hour and seventeen minutes, watching the rectangle of sky in the skylight and counting the distance between where she was and where she needed to be. The room smelled of floor polish and damp wool and the faint institutional sweetness of soap bought by the crate. She had lived inside that smell for two and a half years. She was breathing it now the way you breathe the air of a place you are leaving: noticing it at last, and filing it.
