“There was a moment when her finger hovered over the trackpad.”

The notification was on the screen. The message was visible. The first sentence was readable from the preview pane: “I have read your published accounts of the Bureau for Threshold Research's investigations.” A reconstruction of how it began — and of the choice that could not be unmade.

How it begins

Book Four: The Record A Novel Sometimes I think the dead are easier than the living. The dead at least have decided what they want from us. — overheard at a wake, Amsterdam, 2031

the counter, in her stocking feet, and watched the canal through the kitchen window. It was January and the canal was not quite frozen but the houseboats were dark and one of them — the green one moored opposite — had a thin rim of ice along the waterline that caught the light from the streetlamp on the bridge. It was twenty past five. The proceedings opened at ten. She had not slept much. She had gone to bed at eleven and had been awake at one and at three and at four-thirty, and at four-thirty she had given up and lain on her back in the dark and gone through the order of business in her head, which was something she had not been able to stop doing for nine days. The order of business was forty-three pages long. She knew it. She had written most of it. Knowing it did not stop the going through. She finished the coffee. She rinsed the cup and set it upside down on the rack. She wrote a note for Mira on the back of an envelope — gone, train at 6:24, will call from the chamber at lunch, love you — and propped it against the salt cellar where Mira would see it when she came down at seven. She put on her coat in the hall. The coat was her good wool one, black, single-breasted, which she had bought after Sebastien died because Sebastien had hated her old one and after he died she had decided that wearing it was a way of not being widowed yet. She had worn it for fourteen years. She put it on now and buttoned it and wound her grandmother’s scarf around her neck and picked up her bag and her papers and let herself out.

Who it is for

Is this your kind of book?

The Record is documentary science fiction — every finding recorded in two parts — what was achieved, and what the achievement cost. It is written for readers who want the patient kind of crime and suspense: plotted, unhurried, and more interested in what people conceal than in how loudly it ends.

This is Book Four of The Threshold Bureau. Each book closes its own case, so it can be read on its own — but the series is built to be read in order, and starting at The First Knowing means the connections land the way they were written.

Why buy it here

Buying from this page gets you both formats in one purchase — the EPUB for your e-reader or phone, and the PDF for everything else. There is no DRM on either file, so the book is genuinely yours: move it between devices, keep a backup, read it in ten years on something that has not been invented yet.

The download link arrives the moment the payment clears, and it is tied to the email you paid with — so if you lose the file, the link can be re-issued to that same address. And buying direct means the money goes to the person who wrote the book rather than a retailer’s cut.
